Spire

No-one knows rope access and rigging like we do!
Spire Solutions is a small team of highly trained, highly skilled, access,
rigging and rescue professionals.

A background in both the building industry and expedition mountaineering, combined with a passion for heritage architecture, led David Wallis to form Spire in 2006. Now a family-run business, Spire has carved out a unique niche as Melbourne’s only built heritage specialist access company. Our commitment to maintaining a small close-knit team ensures our output is conducted with care and the highest quality.

In the years since our foundation, Spire has been entrusted with the care of several iconic cultural landmarks, ranging from St Paul’s cathedral in the heart of Melbourne to Uluru in Central Australia, ‘Modern’ built heritage like Sidney Myer Music Bowl and The Arts Centre and many of Melbourne’s Victorian era commercial facades, emblematic of the city’s gold boom.

The demand for our specialised access and rigging skills has also seen us engaged on large infrastructure including the Eastlink tunnels, Sydney Olympic Stadium, State Sporting facilities, Victoria’s coal fired power stations and surrounding mining infrastructure

Why Choose Spire

Traditional Building techniques employed on heritage structures evolved in concert with traditional materials. The transition to more modern practices has led to a scarcity of knowledge on heritage trades. The imposition of modern remedial techniques and materials can be ineffective or even advance cycles of decay on your structure

Our work is informed by our membership of the Association for Preservation Technology, our understanding of The Burra Charter and the Society for Protection of Ancient Buildings manifesto, and our experience working alongside established leaders in the built heritage field. All of these combine to give us the capability to aid in the conservation of our collective built heritage

“Stave of decay by daily care” – SPAB Manifesto

“Do as much as necessary to care for the place and to make it usable, but otherwise change it as little as possible so that its cultural significance is retained.” – The Burra Charter

It is frequently the case that the most advanced cycles of decay are found on the elements of a building which present the greatest access challenges. Our unique level of experience positions us to employ the most appropriate cost-effective, small-footprint access method in the safest way possible. Whether that be advanced rope access, EWP, flying scaffolds, or traditional steeplejack laddering. Using these techniques allows us to minimise impact to both the fabric and the utility of a heritage structure.
